Dr Ajay Kumar has assumed the charge of Director, Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), DRDO, Dehradun w.e.f. 31 May 2022.

Dr Ajay Kumar obtained his MSc Physics from Kurukshetra University, M.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Ph.D on Signal processing from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. He Joined IRDE in 1989 as Scientist ‘B’.

Dr Ajay Kumar has wide knowledge and experience in the design, development, product realization, integration and user trails and evaluation of electro optical systems. An expert in the area of signal and image processing, his efforts has led to successful completion of several important defence related projects through the indigenous technology development and realization. Some of the important projects executed by him include Gap Measuring Device Mk-III (GMD), Integrated Multi Function Sight (IMFS), and Commander Thermal Imagers for Armored Fighting Vehicles, Observation Range Enhancement Module, Multi spectral sensors, mega pixel sensors and technologies for IRST system.

Dr Ajay Kumar led several joint development programs with Israel under government collaborative programs. He has guided various PhD scholars and M Tech students. He has published several research articles and technical reports in various national and international journals and is Member of IEEE, IETE and OSI. He is recipient of DRDO Agni Award and Technology Group Award for development of Integrated Multi function Sight and third generation Thermal Imagers.
