Shri KPS Murthy
Outstanding Scientist & Director, HEMRL

Shri KPS Murthy assumed the charge as Director of High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune on 1st August 2015. Prior to appointment as Director HEMRL, he has served as Associate Director of Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune.

Shri Murthy, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, started his scientific journey with ARDE and made outstanding contributions in the design & development of warhead subsystem of various missiles such as Prithvi, Akash, Nag, Area Defence, Nirbhay etc. He was instrumental in developing many advanced warhead technologies like Detonation Wave Aiming, Deep Penetration, Thermobaric Warheads and High performance Shaped Charges. Under his guidance, several design and testing facilities were also established.

In his career spanning 33 years, he has pioneered and innovated Variable Mass Preformed Fragmentation concept for wide area neutralisation, Tandem Warhead for 3rd generation anti tank missile system, Fragment Generator for Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) applications, Directional blast and Shaped charges for under water application, Thermobaric (TB) warheads for bombs, novel PCB & TB ammunition for MBT Arjun, pyro operated safety arming mechanisms (SAM) for various weapon systems. Under his leadership, HEMRL has developed Explosive Reactive Armour Mk-II, BMCS, AL-AT smoke grenade, Thermobaric munitions, Insensitive Munitions and IR Flares have gained great momentum for User Evaluation and subsequent induction. He was also instrumental in the development of high performance high explosive compositions, nitramine rich gun & rocket propellant formulations for futuristic applications. He also initiated and established several simulation and testing facilities for High Explosive and propellant compositions, QC systems and procedures, processing facilities like robotic segmented mandrel extraction, granulation machine, Twin-screw extruder mixer, etc.

He has published more than 68 technical papers in reputed national & international journals, seminars and symposiums. There are 11 patents to his credit.

He is the recipient of many prestigious awards including: Bharat Ratna Dr. Abdul Kalam Award for Innovation in Aviation by AeSI 2019, DRDO special award for strategic contributions 2017, DRDO Agni Award for Excellence in Self Reliance in 2014, 2009 and 2005, DRDO Award for Performance Excellencein 2016, 2014, 2012, DRDO Award for Path-Breaking Research/Outstanding Technology Development in 2008, DRDO Scientist of the year Award in 2008, Dr Biren Roy Trust Award (AeSI) in 2007, DRDO Lab Level Technology Group Award in 2006.

Under his dynamic leadership HEMRL has been awarded Titanium Trophy by DRDO in 2019, Public Sector of the year Award 2017 by Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM), SKOCH order of merit award in 2017.

He is a fellow of Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) and life member of High Energy Materials Society of India (HEMSI) & Indian National Society for Aerospace and related mechanisms(INSARM) and The Indian Science Congress Association. At present, he is leading the AeSI Pune chapter as President and as Vice Chairman at the National level. He is leading the High Energy Materials Society of India (HEMSI) as President at the National level.
