Lightning Protection for Hansa-3 & Saras Aircraft

Hansa-3 aircraft developed by the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bangalore,Lightning strike test on Hansa-3 aircraft is an all composite aircraft made of
fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and is very vulnerable to lightning damage. The protection scheme for the complete aircraft was evolved by testing on a full-scale aircraft. The scheme was incorporated and tested according to FAR-23 standards. The aircraft has been qualified as lightning worthy by the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA).

NAL is designing and developing a 14-seater Saras aircraft. The lightning protection scheme for the aircraft's control surfaces made of CFC was designed and tested. The lightning protection scheme for the Saras radome has also been designed .
