Continuing Education Programme

DARL, Haldwani

Under the continuing education programme (CEP) of DRDO, the Defence Agricultural Research Laboratory (DARL) Base Station, Haldwani, organised a course on Bio-Diversity, Genetic Engineering and Agriculture Production during 6-11 August 2001. Dr GK Garg, Officer on Special Duty , Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Modipuram, inaugurated the course. Twenty-two participants from various DRDO labs/ estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: bio-diversity, institutional challenges and linkages, prospects of transgenic crops in hills, bio-technological tool in disease diagnosis of animals, bio-chemical pathway of lipid synthesis, molecular tools for screening of bio-diversity, use of RAPD technique in vegetable improvement,  isolation, cloning and sequencing of genes, status of Indian gene centres and regulatory measures, study of aromatic plants, irrigation scheduling, soil survey and land use planning, modern technology for vegetable cultivation, progeny row trial, mango malformation, dense cultivation of mango, soil solarisation, eco-friendly management techniques, etc. Dr Sant Ram, Ex-Dean, College of Post-Graduate Studies, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, presided over the valedictory function and distributed course certificates to the participants.

DESIDOC, Delhi

The Defence Scientific Information &Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), Delhi, organised a course on Multimedia and Information Technologies during 27-31 August 2001. Twenty-five participants from various DRDO labs/estts; Directorates of Electronics, Missiles, Engineering, and Aeronautics at DRDO HQrs; Offices of SA to CNS and SA to COAS, New Delhi attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: multimedia technologies, multimedia development tools, multimedia on web, multimedia communication, web casting, building up multimedia facilities, creating multimedia applications, multimedia project management, multimedia resources on internet, and multimedia copyright issues. Dr Mohinder Singh, Director, DESIDOC, inaugurated the course and also presided over the valedictory function and distributed course certificates to the participants. Shri SK Taneja, Sci E, and Shri SC Saxena, Sci D, were the training DIRECTOR and course DIRECTOR, respectively.

IAT, Pune

The Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), Pune, organised a course on Fibre Optic Smart Sensors during 6-10 August 2001. Dr CP Girijavallabhan, International School of Photonics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, inaugurated the course. Twenty-seven participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course.The topics covered during the course were: optical wave guide theory, optical modulation techniques, sources and detectors, fibre optic components, chemical and physical sensors, fibre optic brag grating sensors, optical nerves, integrated optics and fibre sensors for aircraft and marine applications. Laboratory demonstrations of various fibre optic sensors were also part of the programme. Dr HN Acharya, Head, Dept of Physics, lIT, Kharagpur, distributed course certificates to the participants. Shri N Chandrasekaran, Sci D and Shri Pradeep Kumar, Sci C were the course DIRECTOR and course coordinator, respectively. IAT, Pune, also conducted a course on Structural Dynamics during 9 -13 July 2001. Prof GS Mani, Director & Dean, IAT, inaugurated the course. Thirty participants from various DRDO labs/estts including two from local engineering college attended the course. The topics covered during the course included: single and multi-degree of freedom systems, model analysis, approximate methods and FEM vibration and stability of beams/plates/shells, passive and active vibration control, statistical energy analysis, random vibrations and signal processing, fluid structure interactions, and three case studies on vibrations of components, sub-assemblies of aircrafts/missiles/turbines. The faculty consisted of eminent experts in the field from IAT; lIT, Bombay; ADE and GTRE, Bangalore; and RCI, Hyderabad. Shri S Sadasivan, Sci G, ADE, was the chief guest for the valedictory function and also distributed course certificates to the participants. Dr SY Bhave, Sci G and Shri BP Patel, Sci D were the course DIRECTOR and course coordinator, respectively.

TBRL,Chandigarh

The Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, organised a course on Terminal   Ballistics Studies during 6-10 August 2001. Apart from TBRL, participants from PXE, Balasore; CEES, Delhi; Directorate of Armaments, DRDO HQrs, New Delhi; IAT and HEMRL, Pune; attended the course. The topics covered during the. course DEALt with various aspects of terminal ballistics. The faculty was  drawn from Central Forensic Sclence Laboratory , Chandigarh; DMSRDE, Kanpur; and TBRL, Chandigarh.
