Hon'able President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam visited Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad, on 5 August 2005. He was accompanied by Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, Governor of Andhra Pradesh. Shri M Natarajan, Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri and Dr D Banerjee, Chief Controller Research & Development (AMS) also graced the occasion. Dr AM Sriramamurty, Director, DMRL presented overview of the Enabling Technology Centre of Investment Casting Technology through a video presentation.
Dr Sriramamurty explained the technology used to produce very complex geometrical shapes with intricate cooling passages with thin walls using Ni-base super alloy. The products include integral rotors and stators for Jet Fuel Stator (LCA), Pilotless Target Aircraft (PTA), and blades and vanes for Kaveri Engine.

Enabling Technology Centre for Investment Casting is a step forward in the quest for self-reliance in critical defence technologies. The centre ultimately leads to the establishment of commercial production centres for the state-of-the-art castings for aeronautical as well as land based turbines.

President witnessed the various stages of casting viz., injection die, assembling, cluster preparation, dipping area, cleaning and de-waxing process, directional solidification furnaces and finally the components of Tejas (LCA). He appreciated the single crystal blades and the whole process of Investment Casting and emphasised on self-reliance in all sectors, especially for the national defence.
