The Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur, organised a course on Phytochemical Analysis of Plant Products during 24-28 September 2001. The course was aimed to update skill and knowledge of the scientists. Dr PV Seethapathi, Director, North-Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management inaugurated the course. Twenty-seven participants from various DROO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered in the course were: collection and extraction of plant materials, chromatographic techniques for purification of bio-active fractions, importance of structure determination in phytochemistry, spectroscopic methods and its application in structure elucidation. The faculty was drawn from the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) , Kolkata; Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), Jorhat; and the Defence Research & Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior .
Shri SC Das, Director, DRL, Tezpur, delivered the valedictory address. Dr PK Chowdhury, Scientist, RRL, Jorhat, distributed the course certificates to the participants. Shri DC Goswami, Sci D, was the course DIRECTOR.
The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), Bangalore, organised a course on Machining Technology of Aerospace Materials during 10-14 September 2001. Thirty-one participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The faculty consisted of academicians from MSR Institute of Technology, scientists of GTRE and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore. The topics covered during the course were: gas turbine materials, principles of metal cutting, traditional/nontraditional machining, cutting tool materials, cutting tool temperature and surface, selection of cutting fluids, wirecut EDM, process planning, and NC machining technology. Director, GTRE distributed the course certificates to participants.
The Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), Pune, organised a course on Knowledge Based Engineering during 24-28 September 2001. Nineteen scientists/service officers attended the course. The topics discussed in the course were: neural networks, evolutionary algorithm, fuzzy logic, fractals and chaos, simulation, case studies on neuro-fuzzy system, neuro-genetic algorithm systems, and fuzzy logic control design. The faculty was a drawn from University of Pune, National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Tata Research Development Design Centre (TRDDC), IAT, and Central Water & Power Research Station (CW&PRS). Dr RC Tripathi, Sci E and Dr (Smt) SD Naik, Sci D, were course DIRECTOR and course coordinator, respectively.
IAT organised another course on Multimedia Applications and Design during 24- 28 September 2001. Prof GS Mani, Director & Dean, IAT inaugurated the course. Twenty-six participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: vector graphics, image scanning and editing, photoshop art, 2-D animation, 3-D modelling and animation, web designing and digital audio/video. The faculty included: Smt Vaishali Shah, Shri Miz Sojitrawala and Shri Ravindra Desai from Arena Multimedia, Pune; Smt Deepali Modi of I-Scope Multimedia, Pune; Shri SP Ghanshani, Graphics Artist, Pimpri. Dr K Ramchand, Director, Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), Bangalore, presided over the valedictory function and distributed course certificates to the participants.
Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun, organised a course on Thermal Imaging Technology during 8-12 October 2001. Forty
participants drawn from different DRDO labs/estts, ordnance factories, DGAQA, RCMA, Bharat
Electronics and Services attended the course. The course was inaugurated by Shri N R Iyer,
ex-project Director, Nag, DRDL, Hyderabad, who delivered a keynote address on ATGMs
with focus on thermal imaging and future trends. Starting from the fundamentals of
infrared technology, the course was designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of
thermal imaging sub-system technologies, future trends and operational scenario of
infra-red sensors. Faculty included experts of different disciplines from IRDE, Dehradun;
RCI, Hyderabad; and DL, Jodhpur. Director, IRDE addressed the participants and highlighted
the strategic importance of thermal imaging systems for defence and spin-off benefits for
civilian applications. Dr R N Singh, ex-Associate Director, IRDE delivered the valedictory
lecture and distributed the certificates to the participants.
The Institute of Technology Management (ITM), Mussoorie, organised a course on Management by Human Values and Advanced Organisational Behaviour during 24-29 September 2001. Brig (Dr) RC Pathak, Director, ITM, inaugurated the course. Seventeen participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: management of conflict, management of changes and human values, interpersonal effectiveness, and overview of the genesis of ethics and of changes and human values. The faculty consisted of Prof (Smt) Gopa Bhardwaj, Dean & Chairperson, Department of Psychology, Delhi University; Shri KC Arora, Executive, Forbes Marshal, Pune; Smt Shashi Mishra, IAS, Secretary, ICAR, New Delhi; and speakers from ITM. The valedictory function was chaired by Brig (Dr) Pathak who distributed course certificates to the participants.
ITM organised another course on Transfer of Technology during 10-21 September 2001. Brig (Dr) RC Pathak, Director, ITM inaugurated the course. Twelve participants from various DRDO labs/estts attended the course. The topics covered during the course were: Government support measures in technology transfer, technology transfer negotiation, technical transfer and agreements, introduction to IPR and relevance in technology transfer, technology transfer from R&D institutes, technology transfer from strategic alliances, and technology transfer case study on Sangrha. The faculty consisted of Dr Viney Kumar, Sci G, DSIR; Shri AK Nayyar, Director of Missile, DRDO HQrs; Shri V Gulwani, Addl Director, IPR, DRDO HQrs; Dr AS Rao, Sci F, DSIR; and Shri BB Rao, Sci F, DLRL. The valedictory function was chaired by Brig (Dr) Pathak who also distributed course certificates to the participants.
Course for Tea Planters
The Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur, organised a training course on Agricultural Wastes Management at Bagrodia Tea Estate, Dibrugarh, during 12-15 September 2001. Eighty tea planters and vegetable growers took part in the training course. Shri Niraj Verma, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the course. Shri RG Bagrodia, Managing Director, BPI Pvt Ltd, expressed his satisfaction and hoped that the participants will bring sustainable agricultural revolution using wastes in eco-friendly way. DRL also arranged a Malaria Camp and Water Testing Facility demonstration to develop consciousness among villagers on healthy environment.
LRDE & NPOL Organise Workshop on Signal Processing
The Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bangalore, in association with the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Kochi, organised a Workshop on Signal processing during 4-5 October 2001. Directors, scientists from various DRDO labs/estts and academicians from Indian Institute of Technologies and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, participated in the workshop. Dr GM Cleetus, Director, LRDE presided over the inaugural function while Shri V Chander, Director, NPOL delivered the inaugural address which focussed on approaches to signal processing. Dr Cleetus delivered a talk on radar detection and parameter estimation in ground-based and airborne radars bringing out the features and present status of radar signal processing at LRDE. Ten presentations were made during the workshop. The workshop provided good interaction among academicians and scientists of DRDO in utility of research work/cross utilisation of know-how developed by various labs/estts which can help DRDO programmes and decisions were taken on inter-laboratory cooperation and sharing of work and collaborative efforts between DRDO labs/estts and academic institutions including private sector. Shri S Joseph Souriraj, Sci F, LRDE, was the convenor of the workshop.
