Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), Dehradun Centre, organised a
seminar at the Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL), Dehradun, on Dehradun
(Uttranchal)-the National Remote Sensing Hub on 1 December 2001. Shri
Surjeet Singh Barnala, Governor, Uttranchal, inaugurated the seminar.
Shri Barnala expressed his happiness for working on a technology which will help the
mankind and particularly the state of Uttranchal, which is prone to natural disasters.
More than 150 delegates from different institutions and organisations attended the
Dr AS Bains, Director, DEAL, in his welcome address highlighted the use of remote sensing
for the civil and some military applications. Prof RP Bajpai, Vice President IETE and
Director, CSIO, Chandigarh; and Maj General KK Khanna, AVSM, GOC, 14 Infantry Division
were among the eminent speakers on the subject. Six invited talks were delivered by
various experts on the topic of remote sensing, image processing and their applications.

and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), Manali, organised an Avalanche Awareness
Workshop (AAW-2001) for the officers of Northern Command during 15-16 October 2001 at
HQ 15 Corps. Twenty-six officers from 14, 15, 16 Corps and paramilitary forces attended
SASE, Chandigarh, organised a National Snow Science Meet at SASE HQrs during 7-10
November 2001. Shri M Natarajan, Distinguished Scientist and CC (R&D) inaugurated the
meet. The topics covered during the meet were: meso-scale modeling for mountain weather
forecasts, remote sensing techniques for snow and ice, and its usefulness for snow cover
estimation and control structures.
Maj Gen (Retd) S S Sharma, KC, VSM, Director, SASE, urged the student officers to prepare
themselves for ensuing winter. Brig A K Chopra, CSO, HQ 15 Corps was the chief guest for
Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, conducted a one-day workshop
on Detonics and Shock Waves on 13 December 2001. The aim of the workshop was to
know the extent of expertise available in the country in the field of detonics and shock
waves and to have closer interaction with other institutions.
Dr VK Kapoor, Consultant, Armaments, DRDO HQrs, inaugurated the workshop. Shri VS Sethi,
Director, TBRL, welcomed the Chief Guest and delegates while Dr Harihar Singh, Director of
Armaments, DRDO HQrs, introduced theme of the workshop. Scientists from various DRDO labs/
estts, delegates from academic and other institutions attended the workshop.
