Appointment

KS ManjaDr KS Manja has been appointed Director, Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysore, wef 1 November 2000. Dr Manja obtained his post-graduation in Medical Microbiology from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, in 1970. He worked at Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry, till 1974. He continued his research on leprosy at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He joined DRDO at Defence Research & Development Establishment, Gwalior, and developed few rapid methods for microbial detection. He has contributed significantly to the environmental microbiology. He has developed a novel method of testing drinking water for microbial pollution that is being used in South America, Canada, South East Asia, etc. He is the editor of Asian Journal of Experimental Sciences and member of Editorial Boards of International Journal of Food Microbiology (Denmark) and Journal of Food Science and Technology. He is also a member, Specialist Group, Health Related Water Microbiology, USA; Chairman, Expert Committee (1999), constituted by UNICEF and Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment, Government of India, for devising simple microbiological test for rural water supply. Dr Manja has been awARDEd Vijnana Rathna jointly by National Centre for Science and Technology Communication, New Delhi, and Science Centre, Gwalior, in 1991. He has three patents and seventy-four research publications to his credit.

From Sci F to Sci G

KSR MurthyShri KSR Murthy of the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad, is presently leading a team of scientists in the field of sensors and signal conditioners, telemetry and telecommand, RF systems, on-board power supplies, and miniaturisation of telemetry systems. He has established static trial facilities for evaluating solid, liquid, ramjet, scramjet, pyro-systems and a number of propulsion sub-systems developed for missile programme. Multiple platforms, remote-controlled data acquisition and video instrumentation systems are some of the systems developed and realised under his guidance. He has also contributed toward the design and development of control electronics for antitank missiles and guidance electronics for IR air-to-air missile/ flight testing and evaluation of performance of the missile on-board an aircraft.

 

PN GadhikarShri PN Gadhikar of the Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, has been working in various capacities and heading armament testing-evaluation division, PZT pilot plant and special project group. He is the recepient of an award for design and development of a twin explosive double cone centering device and has received the DRDO Technology Award in 1997 for development of piezoceramic elements for sonar system. He has done commendable work on project Himalaya. He has several papers, three patents and a copyright to his credit.

 

 

Bhujanga RaoDr V Bhujanga Rao of the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, is heading warship technology wing and shock, noise and vibration centre. He is also Project Director of Integrated Naval Stealth Technology Programme. He received Scientist of the Year Award in 1993 for his contribution in underwater acoustics and underwater explosion studies. As team leader, he received DRDO Technology Award in 1992 for studies on gas turbine vibration problems. He has also received Commendation Certificate from SA to RM for his contribution on flow noise of aero and hydrodynamic bodies as part of National Science Day 2000 celebrations. He has been elected Fellow of National Academy of Engineering for 1999.

 

RR RaoDr RR Rao of the Naval Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Cochin, is involved in technical management and research investigation of various projects, like comprehensive oceanography and marine acoustics programme, planning and execution of INS Sagardhwani and Bay of Bengal Mansoon Experiment. He is a member of national project planning and review committees and working groups of Departments of Science & Technology, Ocean Development, Space, and CSIR. He is also a member of selection boards for National Institute of Oceanography, Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation, and Goa University .He is recipient of Dr EN Desai Award for the best paper published and Commendation Certificate from SA to RM for his contributions to ocean and man. He has 40 papers in international and national journals to his credit.

 

Paramasivan PillaiShri S Paramasivan Pillai of the Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Cochin, has been working in sonar signal processing for the last three decades. He was responsible for system design and was involved in all major sonar projects. He was Project Director of the sonar project and ensured successful technology transfer for production of the sonar. The sonar was accepted as a standard fit for all frontline Naval ships. He is a member of the Institution of Engineers and Fellow of IETE.

Shri Aragonda Lakshmana Moorthy, Sci E, Defence Scientific Information & Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), Delhi has been awARDEd PhD for his thesis titled Impact of Electronic Media on Library and Information Centres with a Specific Reference to India by Karnatak University, Dharwad.

Shri Gautam Gopeshwarprasad Krishnalal, TO B, High Energy Materials Research ; Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune, has been awARDEd PhD for his thesis titled Studies on Nitramine and High Energy Extruded Double Base Propellants by the University of Pune.

Shri A Chakraborty, Sci D, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad,  has been awARDEd PhD for his thesis titled Effect of Nature and Morphology of Discontinuous Reinforcement on Structure-Property Behaviour of Alumina Matrix Composites by Indian Institute of Technology , Kharagpur.

Shri S Sundarajan, Sci D, Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Cochin, has been awARDEd PhD for his thesis titled Predictive Approaches for Choosing Hyperparameters in Linear and Nonlinear Regression Problems by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
