DRDO participated on a large scale in the Orissa cyclone relief operations organised at national level. Some highlights are:

DL, Jodhpur

The Defence Laboratory (DL), Jodhpur, installed eight ultra water purification systems of 20,000 liters per day capacity in the coastal villages of Orissa. Besides, an electrodialysis-based desalination plant of 30,000 l per day capacity was also installed. A team of scientists and technicians of DLJ trained the local rural water supply staff in the operation and maintenance of water purification plants. Defence Minister George Fernandes and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the then SA to RM, visited the area and appreciated the efforts made by DLJ.

NSTL, Visakhapatnam

The Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, rose on the occasion of cyclone relief operation and contributed Rs 3.26 lakh towards purchasing of blankets, saris and tarpaulin sheets. Besides, the Laboratory contributed 40 bags of rice and a large volume of clothes also. Rear Adm S Mohapatra, Director, NSTL, flagged off the lorries loaded with the relief material.

PXE, Balasore

The Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE), Balasore, sent its troops for clearing roads in the Ganjam district. Troops with the help of 9 Engr Regiment from Eastern Command rescued a large number of marooned villagers from 54 villages in the adjoining areas of Balasore. The employees of PXE organised voluntary camps in the interiors of flood and cyclone-affected areas and distributed drinking water, medicine and food packets to the cyclone-hit people.
