Protected cultivation technologies for vegetables in high altitude areas

  • DRL has promoted installation of a large number (23 at present) of polycarbonate houses right from Bomdila (~9000 ft.) to Bumla (~15000 ft.) at different Army units.
  • Due to harsh climatic conditions like heavy snow, rain and landslide, there is scarcity of freshly grown fruits and vegetables at high altitude low temperature areas.
  • The other protected structures like shade net houses are also very useful for growing fruits and vegetable at lower altitude where scorching sunshine is the problem.
  • Protected cultivation with improved agronomic package of practices of crop specific to the locality will ensures continuous supply of fresh fruits and vegetable and will keep the local farmers engaged throughout the year, ensuring regular income.
  • DRL, Tezpur is popularizing protected cultivation of vegetables in forward army units as well as among the farmers located near frontier areas like Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • A group of tactics to partially or fully modify and control the microclimate of the plant sphere as per their growth requirement, known as “protected cultivation” is being popularised and practised in these areas.
