A

COMBAT ENGINEERING & MILITARY BRIDGING

 

(i) MULTISPAN MOBILE BRIDGING SYSTEM (SARVATRA)

Sarvatra is a mechanically launched Multi-span Mobile Bridging System. It is designed to provide traffic ability to military vehicles including the heaviest battle tanks across obstacles, typically encountered along the Western Borders. A 15m long bridge can be launched from the carrier vehicle within 20 minutes and 5 such bridges can be launched in tandem to make a 75m multi-span bridge. 

 

(ii) SHORT-SPAN BRIDGING SYSTEM (SSBS) 5M

Short Span Bridging System 5m - is a mechanically launched bridging system of MLC-70 load class to bridge small gaps and canals.  In addition to bridging the smaller gaps, this bridging system will be compatible with SARVATRA bridging system so that various gaps of 5m to 75m in steps of 5m can be bridged.

 

(iii) SHORT-SPAN BRIDGING SYSTEM (SSBS) 10M

Short Span Bridging System 10m - is a mechanically launched bridging system of MLC-70 load class to bridge small gaps and canals.  In addition to bridging the smaller gaps, this bridging system will be compatible with SARVATRA bridging system so that various gaps of 5m to 75m in steps of 10m can be bridged.

 

(iv) MINEFIELD MARKING EQUIPMENT (MFME)

MFME is an effective and fast system designed to drive pickets along the minefield perimeter and roll out spools of nylon rope. It can mark a minefield perimeter at an average speed of 1.8km per hour for different depths and soil conditions. It can be used to mark a bomb disaster site or construct a temporary perimeter fence.

 

(v) MANUALLY LAUNCHED ASSAULT BRIDGE (MLAB)

The Manually Launched Assault Bridge is a deck-type two girder bridge system. Fully modular, pin jointed structure with inter locking components provide a  4m wide roadway. The standard double-storey bridge can bridge gaps of up to 31m for MLC-60. This capability can be extended to 49m using ancillary equipment. MLAB is simply constructed using two parallel girders consisting of top panels, each 1.83m long that are pinned together.

 

(vi) CREVASSE CROSSING BRIDGE (CCB)

The Crevasse Crossing Bridge is fabricated using light weight high strength weldable and self ageing aluminium alloy RDE-40 for crossing crevasses in snow bound areas. It enhances the mobility of troops, arms, ammunition and supplies in these regions.The light weight crevasse crossing bridge is a two girder bridge. Detachable railing is provided for safety. The bridge is designed for a load of up to 550kg i.e. snow scooter + payload, besides limited uncleared fresh snow.

 

(vii) BRIDGE LAYER TANK T-72 (BLT-72)

BLT is a fast and reliable bridge laying system built on the main battle tank T-72. It is capable of launching a 22m bridge which is 4m wide, within 5 minutes on any wet and dry obstacles, facilitating speedy induction. Its launching mechanism is supported by state of the art hydraulic system for launching and retrieval operation. It has a separate auxiliary engine provided for contingencies

 

(viii) MAT GROUND SURFACING (MGS-70)

Mat Ground Surfacing CL-70 is a track-way expedient which provides smooth movement of tracked and wheeled vehicles during the movement of troops in marshy terrains, shallow waters of up to 1m depth and soft soils.

 

(ix) MIXER-CUM-DISPENSER

In order to rapidly repair bomb damaged runways, rapid hardening cement (rapigrout) and a Mixer-cum-Dispenser machine has been developed. 6 sets have been realised and delivered to Air force.

 

(x) ARMOURED AMPHIBIOUS DOZER (AAD)

AAD is jointly developed by VRDE and R&DE(E) to facilitate earth moving operations for preparing bridge sites in difficult terrain, clearing obstacles and debris and for filling up craters.  The system is based on Armoured Personnel Carrier BMP-II and equipped with bucket, winch, mine plough, jib-crane and rocket propelled anchor.Limited Series Production (LSP) order for 06 Nos. has been completed.

 

(xi) ARMOURED ENGINEER RECONNAISSANCE VEHICLE (AERV)

AERV is jointly developed by VRDE & R&DE (Engrs) to facilitate reconnaissance of sites.  The system is based on Armoured Personnel Carrier BMP-II and equipped with digital cone-penetrometer, water current meter, echo sounder etc. LSP order for 12 Nos. is completed.

GROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR UAV’S AND AUV

 

(i) MOBILE LAUNCHER FOR ‘NISHANT’ UAV’

A Mobile hydro pneumatic launcher for launching remotely piloted air craft weighing 380 kg at a velocity of 45m/sec has been developed and successfully trial evaluated.  Development of a high-speed cylinder operating at 6m/sec has been a great achievement in this programme.

 

(ii) MOBILE LAUNCHER FOR ‘LAKSHYA’ UAV

A ground-support system for transporting, launching and controlling the Lakshya UAV has been developed and delivered.

 

(iii) LAUNCHER FOR AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLE

A containerized system for launching Autonomous Underwater Vehicle has been developed for NSTL. The same has been integrated with INS Sagardhwani.

C

GROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR MISSILE PROGRAMME

 

(i) LAUNCH SYSTEM FOR AGNI

The successful development of Launcher Platforms for AGNI variants. These are Road Mobile Launcher Systems and Rail Mobile launcher Systems for the different variants of Missiles

 

(ii) PRITHVI LAUNCHER SYSTEM

The Air Force and Army versions of the Launchers have been successfully designed and developed. Productionization of the launchers for both Army and Air Force has been carried out.

 

(iii) LAUNCHERS FOR BRAHMOS CRUISE MISSILE

Government of India and Russia has entered into a joint venture for development of a Supersonic Long Range Anti Ship Cruise Missile system.  DRDO & NPOM, Moscow are the development agencies. Programme PJ-10 is the DRDO part of the joint venture.  R&DE (Engrs), Pune has been made a nodal agency for the development of Launcher & ground systems for BrahMos missile. R&DE(E) has designed various Launcher & Ground systems equipments for both demonstration launches as well as launch from land & ship platforms.

 

(iv) B-05 PROGRAMME

This is the submarine based Missile Launcher System.  A Mobile launcher and a Pontoon Launcher have been realized.  The pontoon launcher has been successfully used for flight trials andalso installed on the submarine.

 

(v) AKASH AIRFORCE LAUNCHER (AAFL)

A mobile launcher for launching of AAD surface-to-Air Missile has been successfully developed and realized. AAFL is to carry, support, orient and launch three AKASH articles from an inclined firing position. AAFL is capable of executing tracking commands in slave mode (auto mode). The AAFL is also be capable of orientation of the articles in elevation and azimuth plane simultaneously to commanded positions accurately within specified time duration. The Akash Air Force Launcher is a Trailer mounted Launcher system carrying three Articles. Realisation of Production Order for Launchers completed and handed over (Two Sqdns) and Support Systems (AF version) being productionised through BEL for AF and 48 launchers for Army with other ground systems likely to be released. Army acceptance likely for six batteries (24 Nos) of Wheeled version

 

(vi) LAUNCHER FOR ‘NIRBHAY’

A mobile launcher to carry, support, transport orient & launch a cluster of four sub-sonic cruise air-vehicle from a vertical firing position has also been realized. The launcher is required for an accurate, smooth, safe & stable launch in a well consistent manner in a field environment. Successful Development and Realisation of first prototype has been completed. Flight trials have been conducted successfully.

 

(vii) LAUNCHER FOR MRSAM

MRSAM is land based medium range Air Defence surface-to-air missile system. The system enables transportation, emplacement, erection, activation and launch of 8 MRSAM Canisterised Missile from a vertical firing position in single as well as ripple modes. The re-loader vehicle is used for loading / unloading of Cassettes on the launcher & also used to carry two Canisterised Missile Cassettes. Successful development and realisation of two launcher prototype units have been completed.

 

(viii) QRSAM MOBILE LAUNCHER VEHICLE AND CANISTER

(ix) PRAHAR LAUNCHER

It is a deployable launcher for surface-to-surface mode of AAD Missile. The role of Prahaar missile launcher is to transport, erect, emplace & launch Six Canisterised AAD Missile. The Mobile launcher system for Prahaar is designed & configured to carry six pressurized Canisters of AAD Missile. The system is capable of launching the missiles in both vertical as well as inclined firing position. The launcher is capable of fully automatic operation due to the microprocessor based electric servo drive system. It is based on high mobility TATRA 12x 12 vehicles for cross country requirements. Successful Development and Realisation of Launcher Prototype unit has been completed.

FIELD DEFENCE, COLD REGION ENGINEERING & NBC COLLECTIVE PROTECTION

 

(i) INTEGRATED FIELD SHELTERS (IFS)

The integrated field shelter for NBC protection can be used as Command Post, Storage, Medical, Observation Post, Regimental Aid Centre and Communication Centre. It can withstand nuclear, biological and chemical warfare and provide 96 hours of continuous operation. The field shelter is designed to provide accommodation to 30 people for up to 4 days. It consists of life support equipments such as ventilation system, water supply, decontamination, sewage disposal, utility gen-sets & communication

 

(ii) SAMVAHAK SHELTERS

SAMVAHAK is a project for tactical communication. Samvahak involves setting up of Command Information Decision Support System (CUDSS) at all levels right from Corps HQ to field locations.  For setting up of CIDSS in field location, Samvahak infrastructure is carried in EMI shielded electronic and communication shelters.  The project has been successfully executed in partnership with CAIR. Three different types of shelters viz. System Administration Shelter (SAS), Integrated Command Post Shelter (ICPS) and Gen-Set Shelter (GSS) have been successfully developed and trial evaluated.

 

(iii) MOUNTAINEERING EQUIPMENT

 

Mountainiering eqpt

A variety of mountaineering equipments viz. Plate Type Jummar, Descender, Ladder Ice Wall  Climbing, Ladder Crevasse Crossing, Ice Piton, Pulley, Sledge Evacuation  (FRP), Attachment Causality Clearance Rod Avalanche for soldiers deployed in high attitude regions of Siachen and eastern theatre had been successfully developed and introduced into service.  This equipment have been bulk-produced and supplied to Army during ‘Operation Vijay’.

ENGINEERING

 

(i) WATER CANNON

Varun-Vehicle Mounted Water Cannon System provides an effective, non-lethal means for dispersal of violent mobs. The system can deliver continuous / pulsating water jet through two rotatable platform cannons mounted on the top of the vehicle. A provision to mix irritant / indelible ink has also been incorporated in the cannon system. The equipment has been integrated on TATA LPT 2518 and 2515 and has a capacity of containing up to 12,000 litres of water. This system can deliver continuous or pulsating water jets mounted on top of the vehicle. It is an effective, non-lethal means for dispersal of violent mobs. More than 84 units have been produced and are being used by police forces throughout the country.

 

(ii) HYPERBARIC CHAMBER

A hyperbaric chamber has been developed for the Indian Navy. The chamber provides safe, reliable and controlled atmospheric temperature, pressure and quality of breathing air for treating and training deep-sea divers. This facility has been developed and commissioned at INHS Ashwini, Mumbai.

 

(iii) MOBILE AERIAL MAST

The 18.6 m long telescopic mast capable of lifting an antenna weighing two tons has been developed, which is based on TATR A vehicle.

 

 

 

F

ROBOTICS

 

(i) REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE (ROV) DAKSH

The Remote Operated Vehicle is mainly useful in activities like bomb detection and disposal, handling hazardous material and suspected objects, surveying contaminated locations after nuclear, biological and chemical warfare. The ROV is versatile equipment for improvised explosive device identification and handling. It can also be utilised to survey and monitor nuclear and chemical contamination levels. The ROV has stair climbing capabilities and can operate continuously for 3 hours. The ROV can be controlled either by fibre optic communication over 100m distance or can be controlled by wireless communication over 500m line of sight.

 

(ii) UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE (UAV) ‘NETRA’

This mini UAV has been developed for surveillance applications. The UAV has a range of 2.5km and an endurance of 30 mins. It is battery operated, silent and is equipped with a Day Camera with zoom for detailed surveillance. It also has an optional Thermal Imager for night operations.  Its use can be during anti-terrorist activities, counter insurgency, search and rescue operation during disaster management and police duty. The system was successfully demonstrated during User Assisted Technical Trials to the Army Engineers for effective usage for remote gap measurement. A number of UAV systems have been supplied to Paramilitary Forces and Police and are currently in operation.

COMPOSITES

 

(i) COMPOSITE SONAR DOME

Composite Research Centre in R&DE(E) is developing a composites sonar dome for P15 class of ships for the Indian Navy. The dome is a monocoque structure made up of E-glass reinforcement in epoxy matrix and is fabricated using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding. Twodomseare successfully tested and installed on Indian Navalships

 

(ii) 5M COMPOSITE BRIDGE

The 5m composite bridge has been realised as a substitute for metallic bridges. The bridge achieves more than 40% saving in weight as compared to metallic bridges. The bridge also contains embedded fibre-optic sensors, using which structural health monitoring can be carried out.

 

(iii)COMPOSITE ANTENNA CABIN FOR REVATHI RADAR

A composite antenna Cabin for housing Revathi radar, with in-situ EMI Shielding, has been developed and realised for LRDE Bangalore, achieving about 40% saving in weight.

SABOT  FOR FSAPDS AMMUNITION

Composite Sabot for FSAPDS ammunition has been developed and realised for ARDE, Pune, using Resin Film Infusion fabrication process. The aim was to achieve considerable reduction in weight, as compared to metallic sabot. The challenge involved was to realise complex thick 3D parts with critical tolerances.

COMBAT ENGINEERING & MILITARY BRIDGING

 

(i) COUNTER MINE FLAIL ON T-72 TANK (CMF-T 72)

It is a T-72 tank-mounted minefield breaching equipment with rotating chain-hammers which disintegrated the landmines and thus creates a vehicle safe lane of 4.5m in a single pass.

 

(ii) SELF PROPELLED MINE BURIER (SPMB)

The project SPMB has been developed for laying of 04 types of Anti-Tank Mines, viz. ND MK-I, Ad Mk-I &II and HPDF2. The equipment can store 350 nos of A/T mines on-board at a time in different combinations. Most of the operations of this equipment are performed through electronic control system except arming and dispensing of mine. Using DGPS/GIS system, the equipment also records all the data of mine field and can plot the same on military maps.

 

(iii) MODULAR BRIDGE 46m MLC-70

46m MLC-70 Modular Bridge is a single span, mechanically launched assault bridge of military load class 70. The bridge has a modular construction and therefore can be launched in different spans varying from 14 m to 46 m in steps of 6.5 m. A critical requirement of the system is that it should provide a roadway width of 4m when it is deployed. Further all launching operations should be carried out from the home bank alone without any access to the far bank.  To launch the bridge, the launcher vehicle is positioned on the home bank. A lighter nose is first placed across the gap.

 

(iv) MOUNTAIN FOOT BRIDGE

This is a bridging system wherein the modules, each weighing less than 18kgs can be carried by soldiers, assembled to form a bridge of maximum span 35m and erected over wet/dry gaps within 90 minutes.

 

(v) BAR MINE LAYER (BML) MK-II

This is used for quickly creating minefield by burying anti-tank bar mines. The system can carry about 500 bar mines and lay/bury them at intervals of 6m to 30m. Subsequent to the completion of design reviews, prototype is presently under realization.

 

(vi) MINE FIELD MARKING EQUIPMENT (Mk II)

This system is used for erecting perimeter fence around a minefield by driving angle-iron pickets and tying nylon ropes.

 

(vii) TRAWL ASSEMBLY FOR T-72/T-90 TANKS

Trawl assembly is equipment designed to create a Vehicle Safe Lane (VSL) of 5.39 m width through a mine field using four number of trawl tanks in tandem. A Trawl Roller assembly is a device mounted on a tank, designed to detonate anti-tank mines. It allows engineers to clear a lane through a minefield which is protected by enemy fire. The device is usually composed of a fork or two push arm assemblies fitted to the front of a tank hull, with two banks of rollers that can be lowered in front of the tank's tracks. Each roller bank has several heavy wheels studded with short projecting steel girders, which apply a higher ground pressure than the tank's tracks. This ensures the explosion of pressure-fused anti-tank mines, which would otherwise explode under the track itself. A mine plough is a tank-mounted device designed to clear a lane through a minefield, allowing other vehicles to follow. Buried land mines are ploughed up and pushed outside the tank's track path or tipped over.

 

(viii) BRIDGE LAYER TANK ARJUN (BLT-ARJUN)

BLT-ARJUN is a Technology Demonstrator of an assault-bridging system based on slide launch concept.  It is capable of deploying 24m steel / 26m Al. Alloy Bridge within ten minutes.

B

FIELD DEFENCE, COLD REGION ENGINEERING & NBC COLLECTIVE PROTECTION

 

(i) REINFORCED HARDENED SHELTER

This shelter is collective protection shelter for protection of 60 personnel for 7 days during NBC environment for 500 kT yield of weapon at a distance of 1.6 km from ground zero. The shelter is designed and developed after experimentations on Steel Fibrous Reinforced Cement Concrete (SFRCC). The sub systems such as NBC ventilation system, Centralized monitoring & control unit with NBC sensors and Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) protection were also designed and developed, complete shelter is air conditioned.

 

(ii) INFLATABLE NBC SHELTER

Inflatable NBC Shelter is designed for providing NBC protection to 10 men for 48 hrs. It can be used as command-control post, rest-relief shelter or medical treatment centre. Inflatable beams and arches are used as structural members. It can be erected within 10 min, and can be fully operational in 30 min. The shelter is man-portable and equipped with all necessary life-support systems such as for climate-control, ventilation, and power-supply.

 

(iii) MOBILE NBC SHELTER

A mobile NBC collective-protection shelter with NEMP protection has been designed to operate in nuclear fallout zone. It can be used as a command and control post. It provides protection for 8-10 persons for 96 hours in NBC environment. The shelter design has been completed and is under realisation.

 

(iv) LARGE SPAN HANGAR AND COMPOSITE SHELTER

Large-span hangar based on inflatable structure is under development to provide environmental protection to Heron and Searcher UAV’s. Composite Shelter is a single piece underground structure duly fitted with life support system to provide NBC collective protection for 96 hours. These S&T projects taken up under Programme on NBC Defence Technologies are presently under design stage.

ENGINEERING

 

(i) AIRCRAFT-ARRESTER BARRIER SYSTEM

This system has been developed for stopping the SU-30 aircrafts at the end of the runway during emergency landing. It consists of hydraulically operated stanchion system and nylon multi-element net which can be deployed within 3-5 seconds.

 

(ii) SHORE-BASED TEST FACILITY

This facility is being set-up by R&DE(E) to support ADA in the development of naval-version of LCA. The facility consists of development and commissioning of ski-jump runway and associated equipment to simulate the aircraft-carrier on land.

ROBOTICS

 

(i) CONFINED SPACE REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE (CSROV)

This system has been developed for stopping the SU-30 aircrafts at the end of the runway during emergency landing. It consists of hydraulically operated stanchion system and nylon multi-element net which can be deployed within 3-5 seconds.

 

(ii) SURVEILLANCEREMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE (SROV)

The DAKSH-SCOUT is remotely controlled from a portable Operator Console using RF with operating range of 200m line of sight. It has adequate number of cameras suitably mounted on the platform for real time viewing in front, at the rear and on either side. The DAKSH-SCOUT has climbing capability on 35 degree slope/stair with maximum 165mm riser height. Technology for Indigenous Tracked platform for surveillance applications realized

 

(iii) UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE HANDLING ROBOT (UXOR)

The UXO handling Robot (UXOR) is capable to handle, diffuse and detect Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) i.e. Bombs and Missiles up to 1000 kg remotely from of 1km LOS. UXOR is based on a IC Engine operated, tracked Skid Steer Loader platform, good cross country mobility with six hours of endurance.Range of remote operation is 1000m. UXOR is capable to Diffuse Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) i.e. Bombs and Missiles with low order detonation. UXOR is having a multiple DOF manipulator arm with cutting mechanism to defuse the UXO.

COMPOSITES

 

(i) INTEGRAL ARMOURED HULL

An integral armoured Hull for infantry Combat Vehicle is under development at R&DE(E). The segment of the hull has been realised. Testing of the hull segment is also completed. The top part of the hull, in one piece, has also been realised and the bottom part of the hull is under realisation. When completed, the weight saving as compared to metallic hull, will be around 35% to 40%.

 

(ii) MEMS

R&DE(E) has a state-of-the-art UV-LIGA based Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) fabrication and characterization facility. The establishment has also undertaken the task of designing and realising several devices such as Safety and Arming Fuse for Pinaka and accelerometers for Structural-Health-Monitoring applications. Several MEMS components for Fuse Safety and Arming mechanism such as permanent G-switch, floating G-switch, and miniature explosive switch have been realised.
