About Lab

NSTL DRDO

Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam was established on August 20, 1969 to undertake research and development of complete major naval systems (Underwater Mines, Torpedoes, Fire Control Systems, Weapon Launchers, Targets, Decoys, etc) for the Indian Navy to make it self-reliant. NSTL was established to work towards design and development of underwater weapons and associated systems and structural design of naval platforms. The vision, mission and core competence of the laboratory are as follows:

Vision

NSTL will be a center of excellence for

  • Design, development and testing of underwater weapons, and associated systems
  • Hydrodynamic studies of surface and sub-surface platforms and bodies
  • Stealth technologies for naval platforms
Mission
  • Design, Development and evaluation leading to productionisation and introduction into services and also establish test facilities for light weight/heavy weight Torpedoes, Mines and Decoys.
  • Establish world class Hydrodynamic Test Facilities for evolving design criteria through model studies for surface and sub-surface Vehicles and Torpedoes.
  • Develop structural design capabilities and materials for Mitigation Radar IR, Magnetic, Acoustic and ELFE Signatures leading to tealthier patforms.
Quality Policy
  • Excellence in design, development and testing of underwater weapons, weapon control systems, surface and submerged platforms conforming to latest technological development
  • Rendering expert services in related areas of associated science and technology
  • Meeting the requirements of DRDO and other customers whose projects it undertakes
  • Continual improvement in technological fields it serves
  • Meeting applicable regulatory and statutory requirements
  • Through implementing its quality management system based on the requirements of ISO 9001 : 2000 certificate approved by M/s Llyod Registered Quality Assurance.
