NABL ACCREDITATION

Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory has been granted accreditation by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 for its facilities in the field of Testing with effect from 18 May 2018. The scope of accreditation includes Underwater Acoustic Measurements of Transducers & Passive Acoustic Materials and Vibration Testing of Transducers & Passive Sonar Components.

ISO-9001:2015 Certification

NPOL, an ISO 9001:2008 laboratory has been upgraded to ISO 9001:2015Certification by IntertekIndia Private Limited, a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) certification body, with effect from 25 April 2018. The quality management system is applicable to Design and Development of Prototypes of Underwater Sensors and Surveillance Systems and Transfer of Technology for Naval Applications.

CBSE Xth National Topper from DRDO/NPOL sponsored school

Sreelakshmi G, student of Bhavan'sVarunaVidyalaya, Thrikkakara, a joint venture of DRDO/ NPOL and BharatiyaVidyaBhavan emerged as one of the national toppers in CBSE Class X examinations with a score of 499/500 marks. NPOL felicitated MsSreelakshmi during 'NPOL-Varuna Merit day' on her meritorious achievement. Chief Guest of the event Shri C Radhakrishnan, renowned Malayalam writer and film director presented the memento and merit certificate to MsSreelakshmi.

NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DAY CELEBRATIONS - 2018

National Technology Day was celebrated on 11 May 2018. Shri. G. Vijay Gopal, Sc. E delivered the technology day oration on 'Sound and Vision' which elaborated the technologies and challenges in the area of Acoustic Imaging, and opportunities in using Imaging Sonars for underwater surveillance. Shri. S. KedarnathShenoy, OS & Director, NPOL presented the NTD medal to the technology day orator.

As part of the celebration, an invited talk was also organized on "Leveraging Technology for the Real World" by Shri G. Vijayaraghavan first CEO of Techno Park, Thiruvananthapuram and former planning board member of Kerala. The informative talk focused on the significance of Science & Technology innovations in India and their applications for societal missions.

Memorandum of Interest (MOI) between DRDO & Cochin Shipyard Ltd

DRDO transferred 18 technologies to the Indian Industry in Defence-industry development meet organised by the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, at Chennai on 18 January 2018. Apart from the above a Memorandum of Interest (MOI) was also exchanged between DRDO and Cochin Shipyard Ltd for manufacturing of indigenous ship based on DRDO technologies. NPOL is nominated as the nodal lab for interaction with CSL.

International Conference on Sonar Systems & Sensors

International Conference on Sonar Systems & Sensors (ICONS-2018) organized by NPOL from 22nd to 24th February 2018. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. K. Sivan, Secretary, Department of Space, and Chairman, ISRO.

Dr. S. Christopher, Chairman, DRDO and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D delivered presidential address. Felicitations were given by Dr. V.K.  Aatre, former SA to RM &  Padma Vibhushan Awardee,  Dr. Samir V Kamat, DS &  DG (NS &M), DRDO and Rear Admiral Antony George, NM, VSM, ACNS (SR) during inaugural function.  Shri. S. Kedarnath Shenoy, OS  &  Director,  NPOL welcomed the gathering.  Dr. T. Mukundan, Convener of the ICONS-2018 proposed the vote of thanks.

Dr. Arogyaswami Paulraj, Professor Emeritus, Standford University, USA   delivered the keynote address on inaugural day.   A Souvenir and a book of abstract of the papers presented in the conference were released on the occasion. Two other keynote talks were given by Prof. John Summerscales, School of Engineering Plymouth University, UK and Vice Admiral A.R. Karve, FOC-in C, Southern Naval Command, Kochi.

As part of the conference there was a pre-conference workshop intended for students and young officers of Indian Navy. The workshop was attended by about 200 participants including 20 young naval officers.  More than 300 delegates including invited speakers attended the conference.  A cultural programme was also arranged on 23 Feb 2018, featuring Indian classical dance recitals.
National Science Day
National Science Day celebrated on 28 February 2018 by organizing enlightening scientific talks. Shri. Praveen Naresh, Sc. F delivered the national science day oration on “Role of Microwave Satellites in Detection of Submerged Objects”. As part of the celebration, an invited talk on “Recent Trends in Ceramics and Advanced Materials” by Dr. K. Muraleedharan, Director, Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata was also organized.
National Safety Week
National Safety Week 2018 celebrated from 5th March to 9th March 2018: Several competitions like Essay, Slogan, Short-Story, cartoon and Quiz focusing on the concept of Industrial and Cyber Safety were conducted. The program started with flag hoisting by the senior technician which was followed by safety day pledge by the NPOL fraternity. A live demo on fire fighting was also conducted to enhance the awareness of fire safety in the organization. Invited talk on “Cyber Safety” by Dr. R. Dhanya Menon, Managing Director Avanzo Cyber Security Solutons, Thrissur  and the India’s first woman cybercrime investigator was arranged on 9th March 2018.

Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated on 08 March 2018.  Shri. S. Kedarnath Shenoy, OS & Director, NPOL offered felicitations on the occasion of IWD 2018 and  highlighted the ancient tradition of depicting women as sources of power and prosperity and its continuation in the history of India citing examples of the success stories of strong and vibrant women including the meritorious achievements of women in DRDO. Dr. Chitra Venkateswaran, Founder/Clinical Director, MEHAC (Mental Health Action) Foundation & Consultant Psycho Oncologist was the chief guest for the programme.  She delivered an enlightening talk on “A Shift to Value Based Health Care”.

INCREON (INhouse Course for Retiring Employees) -2018
A two day orientation course - INCREON (INhouse Course for Retiring Employees of NPOL) for employees retiring on superannuation in 2018 was organized during 14-15 March 2018.  The objective of the course was to prepare the participants to make a smooth transition from an active service life to an equally fulfilling retired life.  The topics covered in the course included psycho-sociological aspects of retired life,  health care in old age from the perspective of different systems of medicine like Allopathy, Homeopathy, Naturopathy and Ayurveda,  Pension Pay Order (PPO) and  pensionary benefits, medical reimbursement under CGHS for retiring employees and planning for judicious post retirement fund  management.

Transfer of Technology (ToT) to BEL
The Licensing agreement for ToT of two NPOL developed sonars - HUMSA-UG and Abhay was exchanged between DRDO and the  M/s Bharat Electronics during DEFEXPO-2018 held at Chennai on 11th April 2018 in the presence of  Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman and other dignitaries including Hon’ble Raksha Rajya Mantri Dr Subhash Bhamre, Dr. S. Christopher, Secretary Department of Defence (R&D) & Chairman, DRDO, Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri, Dr. Samir Kamat, DG (NS&M) and Shri. S Kedarnath Shenoy, OS & Director, NPOL.

Participation in DEFEXPO-2018

NPOL participated in the Defexpo-2018 held at Chennai from 11-14 April 2018. NPOL showcased models of seven export systems/products viz. Advance Light Towed Array Sonar (ALTAS-X), Compact Hull Mounted Sonar System (HMS-X2), Hull Mounted Torpedo Alert system (HUMTAS-X), Low Frequency Dunking sonar (LFDS-X), Underwater Communication system (UWACS TRITON), Portable Diver Detection Sonar (PDDS-X), and Submarine Sonar Suite (SMX2).

Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman , Hon’ble Raksha Rajya Mantri Dr. Subhash Bhamre, Dr. S. Christopher, Secretary Department of Defence (R&D) & Chairman, DRDO and a large number of other dignitaries and delegates from other countries visited the NPOL stall.
