Shri. S Vijayan Pillai, Outstanding Scientist has assumed charge as Director of Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Kochi with effect from 01 April 2019. Shri S Vijayan Pillai started his career in Indian Air Force. He joined DRDO in 1989 as Scientist B. He is M.Tech in Integrated Circuits and System Engineering from IIT Kharagpur.

His short stint in Indian Air Force provided a first-hand experience in airborne, and ground equipment, which has held him in a good stead throughout his career in defense R&D. As DRDO scientist, user perspective, and end-use environment has always been the strongest drives in his system design approach. He had worked in various capacities starting from System User, Maintainer, Circuit Designer, System Designer, Project Coordinator, Project Manager, Associate Project Director, and Project Director for mission mode sonar projects. Before taking over as Director, he served as Associate Director for USHUS sonar systems. The installations of four USHUS systems were carried out in EKM class of submarines at Russian dockyards. He led the DRDO contingent to Russia for the installation, and setting to work of Ushus sonar systems. During this period he had a close interaction with his Russian counterparts.

He has a rich working experience of 30 years onboard submarines and Naval ships with regard to the installation, and commissioning of submarine sonar systems. He had more than 600 days of sailing experience onboard submarines.

He was conferred with the prestigious ‘DRDO Agni Award for excellence in self-reliance’ twice in 1998 for project Panchendriya, and in 2008 for project Ushus. He is a fellow of Institution of Engineers India, The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Life member, Indian Society of Systems for Science and Engineering and Ocean Society of India. He holds two patents and published ten papers into journals and conferences and three technical reports.
