About Lab

NMRL DRDO

NMRL is one of the oldest laboratories of Defence Research and Development Organization located at Ambernath, Maharashtra. It has a proven record of excellence in scientific achievements, particularly focusing attention to the technological requirements of the Indian Navy with regard to Marine Materials and Corrosion protection .

Initially known as Naval Chemical & Metallurgical Laboratory (NCML) the laboratory was set up on 5th January 1953 in a small work centre admeasuring 6000 sq. ft. at Naval Dockyard, Bombay to render scientific assistance to Indian Navy for their day to day maintenance problems. Subsequently R&D activities and many technologies in the field of underwater Anti-corrosive & Anti-fouling paints and Cathodic protection comparable to western countries were developed and accepted by Indian Navy. The scope of the laboratory widened in mid seventies due to continuous interaction with the users i.e. Indian Navy. The Lab witnessed a gradual transformation from research development to import substitution. During this transformation work on High Strength Steel, Transducer Ceramics and Specialty Polymeric materials were initiated in the laboratory. In view of the expertise gained in R&D activities on development of materials and the laboratory’s success in delivering a reasonably good number of products to the Users, DRDO credited the laboratory in the year 1995 by re-christening it as Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) and was shifted to Ambernath in the year 1997. NMRL under its present charter has been pursuing basic research as well as application-oriented technology development in several frontier areas viz. Metallurgy, Polymer, Ceramics, Coating, Corrosion and Electrochemical Protection, Marine Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences etc. NMRL has been given the status of single window for materials for Naval applications.

Simultaneously, the thrust areas for R&D activities in areas such as High capacity fuel cell, Specialty polymers, Processing technologies for metals and ceramics, Advanced protection technologies, Chemical and biological means of environmental control have registered a noticeable growth during late nineties. The excellent performance in the thrust area programmes, led to DRDO approval of expansion and modernization of the laboratory, which resulted in the creation of full-fledged 60 acres Technical-cum- Residential complex at Ambernath. R&D activities here in the field of Advanced stealth materials, High capacity Fuel cell and Welding technologies for High strength Naval steels are taking shape to meet high end materials and technology demands of Indian Navy.
