LASTEC DRDO

Laser Ordnance Disposal System (LORDS)

is a Directed Energy Laser System for remote disposal of unexploded ordnances, surface laid mines, IEDs and other explosive threats located above ground and detected by the sighting sub-system from safe stand-off ranges of 30-250 meters. "LORDS" is a self contained system along with all its support system integrated on TATA-LSV vehicle for stand-alone operation. LORDS comprises of six major sub-systems - Laser Sub-Systems, Laser Optics Module (LOM), Laser Pointing Unit (LPU), Thermal Management System (TMS), Power Sub-Systems (PSS) and Control System (CS)

Eye safe laser for Laser cross-section measurement applications:

An intracavity KTA OPO converted, electro-optically Q-switched Nd: YAG laser has been designed and developed. Thermoelectric coolers (TECs) have been employed to maintain the optimum temperature of laser diode arrays and the combined heat load from the pump chamber and TECs is distributed over the system base plate with embedded heat pipes. Such cooling mechanism has eliminated the requirement of fins and fans in the laser system. Laser source has been developed towards measurement of laser cross-section of co-operative naval targets as per NSTL requirements.

High Energy High Repetition Rate Eye Safe Lasers:

Two experimental prototypes of high energy eye safe lasers have been jointly developed with BI Stepanov Institute of Physics, Minsk, Belarus. One laser is based on Er:Glass laser which directly generates the eye safe wavelength 1540 nm with ~ 25 mJ energy at 20 Hz . Other laser is based on OPO shifted Nd:YAG laser and generates 50 mJ @ 20 Hz at 1570 nm.

Miniature Diode Pumped Nd:YAG laser:

A highly compact, light weight, passively Q-switched miniature diode-pumped Nd: YAG laser has been developed with single clean output pulse (no satellite pulses). The technology is useful for various defence applications including laser range finder, designator, laser ignition and explosives detection etc.

Diode Pumped Nd:YAG Laser for Space Based Altimeter:

LASTEC has developed one unit of 'Qualification Model' and one unit of 'Flight Model' of a Diode Pumped Nd: YAG Laser transmitter for space based altimeter as a joint development activity with LEOS, ISRO. LASTEC carried out the basic laser design and development including electronics, while LEOS supported for space qualified hardware development.

High Repetition Rate Diode Pumped Er:Glass Laser:

Eye safe lasers operating around 1540 nm have the highest permissible ocular exposures accepted by the ANSI2.136.1-1993 standard (1J/cm2 for single pulses). Er: Glass material directly generates this wavelength. High repetition rate operation is possible by diode pumping where heat generation is minimized. Under second phase of DRDO Photonics Programme two prototypes of high repetition rate eye safe lasers have been developed capable of operating upto 20 Hz.

CW Diode Pumped Microchip Green Laser:

Solid-state microchip lasers are perhaps the ultimate in miniaturization of diode pumped lasers with extremely high spatial profile and single longitudinal mode and ultra short pulse durations. These lasers are formed by application of dielectric mirrors directly to two near parallel surfaces of a thin slice of gain material e.g. Nd: YVO4, Nd: YAG. The short cavities can lead to inherently good mechanical stability as well as single-frequency operation. This technology is being widely explored all over the world for generation of tens of milliwatts to hundreds of milliwatts of CW power in red, green and blue region Microchip lasers find applications not only in industrial and scientific fields but they can also lead to ultra-compact and powerful lasers for defence applications such as dazzler.>

High Peak Power Monolithic Miniature Diode Pumped Nd:

YAG Laser:A monolithic, diode side-pumped, passively Q-switched Nd3+ : YAG / Cr4+ : YAG composite laser generating ~ 3 MW peak power pulses at 20 Hz with 15 mJ energy in 5 ns duration has been designed & developed. Such ultra compact and robust laser systems are suitable for variety of applications including range finding, designation and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) etc. Air breakdown has been demonstrated by focussing the laser output as depicted in picture below.

IR Guided Missile Tester:

IR Guided Missile Tester (IRGMT) is a system for performing in situ functionality tests of R 73 IR Guided Missile onboard the LCA. It is a calibrated IR source that generates the signatures of an aircraft as seen by the IR Guided Missiles. It is a universal test system and can be used for testing other IR guided missiles as well.

LGB Kit Tester:

LGB Kit tester is used for checking the in situ performance of the Griffin LGB kit onboard the LCA. It simulates signatures of Laser Target Designators used for LGB delivery in terms of amplitude, wavelength and PRF code as seen by the seeker head of the LGB.
