KYRGYZ-INDIAN MOUNTAIN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CENTER (KIMBMRC)

Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Government of India had established the KIMBMRC at Bishkek and Field Laboratory at Tuya Ashu (located at a height of 3200 m), Kyrgyz Republic as a joint venture between India and Kyrgyzstan with objectives of carrying out short term and long term High Altitude acclimatization, evolving methods for facilitating acclimatization, study the mechanism of development of mountain maladies and their prevention/treatment

3 D Whole Body Scanner

 

3D Body scanners have significant advantages in measuring the human body compared to traditional anthropometric measurement methods. It provides possibilities of measuring a human body without physical contact and eliminate the likelihood of invalid, unreliable and subjective measurement procedures; and vague judgments of posture.

Anechoic Chamber


Fully-Shielded Radiofrequency (RF) Anechoic Chamber’ has been installed in DIPAS to study the bio-effects of broad range of RF radiation exposure (900 MHz-100 GHz) on experimental animal models.

Advanced Research Centre for Yoga

  • Advanced Research Centre for Yoga have been established in collaboration with  CCRYN, Min. of AYUSH has been established.

The objectives of the centre are :

  • To conduct research in the area of management of operational stress and performance improvement of Defence Personnel.
  • To devise yoga packages for different stressful conditions like high altitude, heat and cold exposure, and other extreme climatic conditions.
  • To impart yoga training to the yoga teachers for units
  • To impart yoga training to the Scientists of DRDO and other wings of the Services.

FNIRs

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an optical brain spectroscopy and imaging method that enables continuous, non-invasive and portable monitoring of changes in blood oxygenation and blood volume related to human brain functions. fNIRS has become a common method because of several advantages: it is relatively inexpensive; non-invasive; has good both space and time resolution and can be used repeatedly or constantly with no adverse effects. The application of fNIRS in cerebral functioning studies has been validated by other neuroimaging techniques, showing that the data maintains a strong correlation with data from PET and fMRI BOLD method .

Supine Bicycle Ergometer

Supine bicycle exercise echocardiography has the advantage of imaging during stress and at peak exercise. Accordingly, images are obtained during the development of cardiac ischemia and at its peak rather than at the time when ischemia is resolving. Also exercise induced exaggerated increase in pulmonary artery pressure can be measured in high altitude pulmonary edema susceptible subjects. This can be used as a screening test to predict susceptibility to high altitude pulmonary edema.

Portable ENO Analyser

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide can be measured in exhaled breath. Increased levels were indicative of inflammation while reduced levels indicate pulmonary hypertension. It can be used as screening tool to predict hypoxia sensitivity as reduced FENO levels were found in high altitude pulmonary edema susceptible individual.

Isometric strength Analyser

Portable Muscle Testing Equipment Model-Transformer
The equipment has unique capacity to monitor different types of activities like adduction, abduction, flexion, extension, pronation, supination, inversion, eversion, and rotation of different muscles and joints which can give complete reports of strength, torque, endurance, power, and range of motion with anatomy chart. This advanced muscle testing equipment also can provide comparison within different study participants. Furthermore, it is a portable system that measures muscle activity with advanced features with a cost of around Rs. 360000.00/-

5 Bed Polysomnography recording

For monitoring of sleep pattern under different climates specially at High Altitude a five bed polysomnograph is available with this institute

 

SIMULATION FACILITIES

Chamber for simulation of High Altitude conditions (cold and hypoxia) is available. Chamber can be used for studies upto 4 – 6 hours hypoxic exposure and recording of various physiological parameters.

Climatic chamber for simulation of dry and wet heat conditions is available and is being used for different Heat acclimatization studies and evaluation of protective devices including NBC suits.

Chamber for providing hypoxia exposure using reduced oxygen concentration in Normobaric Chamber is available at the institute. Oxygen concentration is reduced by increasing Nitrogen concentration, inside the chamber. It is used for rapid induction by imparting intermittent Hypoxia training at normal atmospheric pressure.
