Golden Jubilee Curtain Raiser - DIHAR DRDODefence Institute of High Altitude Research was established on 6th June 1962 as Field Research Laboratory and remanded as DIHAR on 27th May 2008. The institute is celebrating Golden Jubilee Year (2011-12). Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, SA to RM, Secy Defence R&D and DG, DRDO has launched the Golden Jubilee Year celebrations of DIHAR on 13 July 2011 in the presence of Shri Sonam Dorjey, Executive Councilor Agriculture, LAHDC; Dr. W. Selvamurthy, DS & CCR&D (LS & IC); Dr. G. Elangovan, DS & CC R&D (RM); Brig Ravinder Srivastava, Stn Cdr, HQ 14 Corps; Dr. R. B. Srivastava, Director DIHAR; Dr. G Ilavazhagan, Director, DLS, DRDO HQrs; Air Cdr S P Waghle, Shri Jaspal Singh, DIG ITBP; Shri Cherring Angchuk, DC Leh along with many other distinguished guests. On this occasion, Dr. Saraswat launched the DIHAR Golden Jubilee Movie 'The High Endeavour' and 'Coffee Table Book' of DIHAR, which was primed in close collaboration with DESIDOC.

Solar Powered Greenhouse and Poultry Hatchery Unit - Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, SA to RM, Secy Defence R&D and DG, DRDO has inaugurated the Solar Power Plant, Thermally Controlled Greenhouse and Solar Powered Hatchery Unit at DIHAR, Leh to utilize the abundant non-conventional energy sources on a large scale in the region.

Integrated Shelter for Troops - DIHAR DRDODr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, SA to RM, Secy Defence R&D and DG, DRDO visited Leh-Ladakh on 15th June 2011 and handed over integrated thermally regulated shelters to Lt Gen Ravi Dastane, VSM, GOC, HQ 14 Corps. The shelters designed and developed by DRDO, are equipped with integrated temperature regulators, biodigestors and air monitoring systems. The shelter is modular type and all the services like HVAC, electrical, plumbing and water supply, sewage disposal, kerosene gensets and solar power are well integrated within the shelter. Dignitaries present during the handing over function included Dr. W. Selvamurthy, Distinguished Scientist & Chief Controller R&D (LS & IC); Dr. G Ilavazhagan, Director, DLS, DRDO HQrs; Dr. R.B. Srivastava, Director, DIHAR, Leh; Dr. (Mrs.) Shashi Bala Singh, Director, DIPAS, Delhi and Sh. D.P. Makkar, Addl Director (Works), DCW&E, DRDO HQrs.

Memorandum of Agreement between DRDO and ICAR - DIHAR DRDODRDO and ICAR signed a Memorandum of Agreement on 23 August 2011, for conservation of plant genetic resources at 'Permafrost Based Plant Germplasm Storage' at Changla Top (5,360 m AMSL). The agreement was signed by Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri, Secretary Defence R&D and DG DRDO on behalf of DRDO and Dr S Ayyappan, Secretary, Deptt of Agricultural Research & Education and DG, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, in a brief ceremony held at DRDO Bhawan. DRDO has established a prototype National Germplasm Repository at Changla, Leh- Ladakh. The facility was launched on 25 September 2010 by Dr. M. M. Pallam Raju, Hon'ble Minister of State for Defence, Govt. of India, in presence of Dr. VK Saraswat, SA to RM.

The facility will provide an insurance against both incremental and catastrophic loss of the plant diversity exploiting naturally available low temperatures at the site. The preserved diversity of the genes will serve as a safety net for current and future food security in an era of global warming and climate change.
