Reaching the Unreached : DFRL Supplied 3 Tonnes of Food Material To Flood Hit Uttarakhand

Three tonnes of processed food materials from the Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) supplied to the flash flood-hit Uttarakhand on 26 June 2012.In all, 200 kg of chapaties, 60 kg of chutney and Dal, 800 kg each of Sooji Halwa, Jeera Rice, Vegetable Pulav ,Upma and 200 litres of Badam Milk and Mango Milk shake (in plastic bottles) that can satiate the hunger of 80,000 people were sent to Uttarakhand .

Barring milk products, the shelf-life of the remaining food items is six months to one year. Apart from the ready-to-eat chapaties (each weighing 40 gram totalling up to 180 kg), the remaining is reconstituted food which can be mixed with hot water to increase the quantity. The three tonnes of food will become 7.5 tonnes after reconstitution.

DFRL Supplied 5 Tonnes of Ready to Eat and Instant Food Material To Flood Hit Jammu & Kashmir

Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), has extended its support with supply of 4 Tonnes of ready to eat food packets and one tonnes of Instant food packets to the people of the Jammu and Kashmir who were reeling under unprecedented floods. Under the agile guidance of Dr Avinash Chander, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri and Secretary - Dept of Defence R & D & DR Manas K Mandal, DG (Life Science) and with constant support and encouragement of DR H V Batra, Director DFRL, staff of DFRL (including Scientist, Technical Staff, supporting staff and PhD students) voluntarily worked round-the-clock and produced 5 tonnes food material within 2 days (7 & 8 Sep 2014).

Jammu & Kashmir Flood Relief Activities of DFRL during 7-10th Sep 2014

The 5 tonnes of food equals to 35,000 meals and each provides 2,800 calories. The five tonnes of ready-to-eat processed food had been airlifted by Indian Air force by its AN 32 Aircraft from Airport, Mysore on 9 Sep 2014. The RTE products being prepared are nutritionally adequate, typically suiting to north Indian palate can with stand air dropping and do not get spoiled if falling to flood waters. The consignment reached Srinagar on 10th Sep 2014, and immediately distributed to the needy people through Indian Air force Helicopters. The instant food was supplied to Air force Relief Camp at Kendriya Vidyalaya School, Srinagar and DFRL team also joined in relief activities.
