Network Services

The Network Services Division (NSD) of DESIDOC is responsible for designing, hosting and maintenance of DRDO website on Internet, DRDO Intranet administration and co-ordination, designing, hosting, maintenance of DESIDOC website, Internet services through OFC based leased lines. The Division is also engaged in software development, hardware maintenance, network management, and provides support for IT-based CEP courses. It is also responsible for interaction with academia, project training of students, webcasting of major DRDO events from Dr Bhagwantham Auditorium, DRDO Directors’ Conference, etc. to DRDO officials.

The main work done by Network services division are:

Defence Science Journal (DSJ)

Defence Science Journal is a peer-reviewed, primary research journal in the area of defence science & technology publishing since 1949. The Journal is published bi-monthly by the Defence Scientific Information & Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), Delhi on the behalf of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, India. It covers various disciplines of science, technology and engineering. The major subject fields covered include: aeronautics, armaments, combat vehicles and engineering, biomedical sciences, computer sciences, electronics, material sciences, missiles, naval systems, etc.

DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology (DJLIT)

DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology (DJLIT), is an international, peer-reviewed, open access jounal that endeavours to bring recent developments in information technology, as applicable to library and information science. It is meant for librarians, documentation and information professionals, researchers students and others interested in the field. It is published bimonthly. It was formerly known as 'DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology (DBIT)'. The Journal invites original research and review papers related to information technology as applied to library activities, services and products.

E-journal Consortium Group

The Group is responsible for the following major three activities:

  1. DRDO E-Journal Service
  2. The DRDO E-Journal Service came into being w.e.f. 01 jan 2009 covering nine publishers and one service provider. DRDO E-JLS consortium facilitates sharing of resources and improving access to information. The resources are shared among DRDO libraries that have common missions, goals, and usage and act on those commonalities. The access to E-Journal is IP based from publishers, however any scientists/officers can also access e-journal from anytime, anywhere through remote access facilities.

  3. Union Catalogue Of Perodical(UCP) Of DRDO Libraries
  4. The Union Catalogue of Periodicals (UCP) 0f drdo Libraries/TIRCs represents the holodings of the journals/Periodicals available in various DRDO libraries scattered all over the country. The entire DRDO Community can access the collection of periodicals in different laboratories on local network of DRDO.

  5. Strategic Information Service(SIS)
  6. In order to keep the project leaders of high priority projects up-to-date about the latest trends in their subject areas, SIS identifies and collects information from printed, electronics, web resources and databases.

Defence Science Library

Library is an ISO 9001:2008 certified library which is equipped with RFID technology. DSL is fully automated and all the in-home activities are arrived out using automated system. It spreads in five floors of DESIDOC and having rich collection of 75,000 technical books, one lakh technical reports, 30,000 SPIE conference proceedings and latest defence related reference materials. It subscribes 600 online journals and 200 print periodicals. The library also having one lakh bound volumes of journals from various publishers.

DSL initiated and implemented the DRDO E-Journals Consortium covering all DRDO labs in the year 2009 with seven major publishers and JCCC service with the budget of Rs 10 crores. Presently two more publishers are added in the Consortium.

DSL also extended its hand in the year 2013 to establishment of Rate Contract for subscription of print journals for all DRDO labs.

Multimedia Services

Multimedia Division provides to services to DRDO top managements, DRDO HQrs/LABS/Estt. and other defence units in the area of media coverage, audio-visual production, archival of photographs, negative audio, video and photo graphics services, printing of photographs, audio/video production, video digitzation, creation of multimedia programmes, consultancy and training on technical presentations.

Main works done By Multimedia Division are:

  • Media coverage related Defence R&D.
  • Event, industrial, product and scientific photography and video coverage support to DRDO labs.
  • Support for live web streaming of DRDO events through internet all over country.
  • Audio visual and multimedia presentation support for various DRDO events, meetings and conferences.
  • Digital archival of audio, video and photographs.
  • Updating of DRDO photo gallery.
  • Audio- visual and multimedia presentation designing.
  • Production of short films & documentaries on various subject related to Defence Research.
  • Maintenance of DRDO photo bank for catering to the demands of photos and video for various publications, exhibitions, web design, video productions and presentations. DRDO photo bank has collection of more than 70,000 digital images of DRDO’s products & technology, events, portraits and heritage photographs.

Knowledge Management Divison(KMD)

Knowledge Management Division (KMD) was created in DESIDOC in 2010. This division has established knowledge repository of DRDO technical reports with the aim to help the SRSO Scientist community in strategically important area of R&D, provide better direction to research efforts, avoid delay and duplication and contribute to the evolution and application of knowledge for implementing strategic and practices that are more defence and technology oriented for sustainable development of DRDO and India’s defence. Currently knowledge Management Division is engaged in creation & development of the following repositories.

  • Knowledge Repository of DRDO Technical Reports: collect all types of technical reports from DRDO laboratories/Establishments as well as from DRDO HQS, again unique report number, scan and digitize. Create metadata, assign keywords, abstract preparation, validation and uploading on intranet server DRONA.
  • Institutional Repository of Research Paper/Articles (Gyansrota): collect Research Paper/Articles published by DRDO Scientific & Technical communities, create metadata, assign keywords (if not given by author), validate and upload on intranet server DRONA.
