Insensitive explosive compositions for Naval warheads

Insensitive explosive compositions for Naval warheads

Insensitive explosive compositions are one of the important requirements for development of Insensitive Munitions (IM).Insensitive munitions are defined as munitions which fulfill their performance requirements on demand but minimize the probability of inadvertent initiation and severity of subsequent collateral damage to weapon platforms, logistic systems and personnel when subjected to selected accidental and combat threats. High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) has developed insensitive explosive formulations for various warheads. Insensitive explosive compositions developed by HEMRL have been accepted as explosive filling in Naval warheads of Heavy Weight Torpedo (HWT) Varunastra, Multi Influence Ground Mine (MIGM) and for warheads of RGB-12,RGB-60 & RL-140 rockets. The compositions developed by HEMRL for the warheads have passed various tests of Insensitive Munition as per international standards. HEMRL has successfully developed various explosive fillings for naval warheads like Advanced Light Weight Torpedo, Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket etc. The warheads filled with indigenously developed less sensitive explosive compositions is found to have performance equivalent to that of conventional systems .
