Dr. P. Sivakumar, Director, CVRDE has been elevated as Distinguished Scientist (DS) w.e.f 11th Sep 2015. Dr. P. Sivakumar graduated in Mechanical Engineering from College of Engineering Guindy, Chennai in 1980, post graduated in Production Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology in 1987 and obtained his PhD., in the field of Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Chennai in the year 2011.
He started his career as Scientist 'B' in DRDO (CVRDE) in 1984 after a stint of a couple of years at private industry. Dr. P. Sivakumar, contributed for more than three decades in the Design & Development of systems, sub-systems of Armoured Fighting Vehicles and its variants.
During this phase, he developed 800 hp automatic transmission, 150 hp automatic transmission, mechanical steering system for indigenous 1500 hp automatic transmission, compact transmission system for 1400 hp power pack and many sub systems of RENK (ARJUN MBT) transmission. He also developed Torque Converter for 150 hp & 550 hp automatic transmission, Concept of Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) and Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) besides the design of Compact 1500 hp, Automatic transmission for Futuristic Main Battle Tank (FMBT).
He completed the 'Armoured Vehicle Technology Course' at DIAT, Pune successfully with special distinction in 1998, and 'Military Vehicle Technology Course' conducted by Cranfield University, UK at Chennai in 2001.
He proved Accelerated Usage Cum Reliability Trials (AUCRT) very effectively and efficiently that lead to the induction of first regiment of ARJUN MBT Mk-I in the Indian Army. He has demonstrated & proven the Medium Fording capability of ARJUN MBT and delivered the production tanks to Users successfully.
He was instrumental in conversion training of the first regiment at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges (MFFR) and the subsequent comparative trials with T-90 to decide the deployment of ARJUN MBT. He has organized successfully a third party auditing of ARJUN MBT by an expert tank manufacturer from abroad, who after evaluation of all the design parameters stated that the Arjun MBT is the only tank which performs efficiently in Indian terrain requirements and they also declared Arjun MBT as "Desert Ferrari", that resulted in the principle acceptance of the second regiment of Arjun MBT Mk-I tanks.
He conceptualized Arjun MBT Mk-II configuration, a multi-disciplinary technological marvel, incorporated 73 tank-fittable improvements, conducted user trials and successfully completed the programme with his leadership acumen in a record time of two years.
He has accomplished the development of Arjun Catapult as per General Staff Qualitative Requirement (GSQR), organized a field trial at MFFR/Pokhran Field Firing Ranges (PFFR) and successfully completed the PSQR trials to the entire satisfaction of the user. GSQR trials are being carried out.
He has completed successfully all the development activities of Carrier Command Post Tracked (CCPT) and expecting the indent for 43 Nos (Rs. 344 Cr) shortly. He developed the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) with all missions (Surveillance, Mine detection & NBC Reccee) and successfully executed 400 hp power pack trial evaluations.
He finalized hull structure design of Arjun ARRV carried out preliminary static & dynamic analyses; finalized PSQR with EME Directorate and the prototype development is in the advanced stage.
Under his stewardship, the manufacturing technology of PTO shaft for Light Combat aircraft (LCA -TEJAS) was successfully transferred to two production agencies; development of 5 kW Generator & hydraulic filters and productionization of high speed bearings for LCA (TEJAS) were also successful. With his dynamic vision, he steered for the completion of Landing Gear design for Rustom-II Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV); achieved the major mile stone of Drop test for MLG & NLG and strength test for MLG.
He has authored 3 books, guided more than 40 academic projects, and published more than 50 technical papers in many national & international conference/ journals.
He is the recipient of "National Design Award- 2012" and "National Design Award in Mechanical Engineering" from the Institution of Engineers (India) through National Design Research Forum, "Defence Technology Spin off Award" of DRDO from Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, "DRDO Performance Excellence Award", "Scientist of the Year Award-2010" from Hon'ble Raksha Mantri , "Distinguished Public Service Award" by VIT, Vellore, "Silicon Trophy Award" in 2010, "Guest of Honour'' from MSRSAS, Bangalore, "Defence Technology Spin-off award" from Hon'ble Raksha Mantri, Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa)" from Sathyabama University for his outstanding contribution in the development of Transmission Systems for Armoured Fighting Vehicles, "Poornaratna Award" for his outstanding contribution towards defence technologies, "Achiever Award" from Anna Univ. Chennai in 2016, "Scientific Excellence Award" from Hon'ble Governor of Tamil Nadu in 2016.
He is a member of many professional institutions like American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA), USA, American Society of Metals (ASM), USA, Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Fluid Power Society of India (FPSI), Bureau of Indian Standards Committee for Transmission elements.
He is also Chairman, Board of Governors for College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai, member of Centre for Technology Development and Transfer, Anna University, Chennai, member of Editorial Board of Sathyabama University, member of Governing Council-Velammal Engg. College, Chennai, member of Governing Council-VELS University, Chennai, external member of the Board of Studies - Centre for Defence Technology Studies, Hindustan University, Chennai, member of Steering Council for Excellence - Park College of Engg & Technology, Coimbatore.
Dr.P.Sivakumar is a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and he has also been elected as Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) for his distinguished contribution to engineering.
